No water, No Life (NWNL) is a long-term project that combines photography,
science and education to assess and document watersheds and provoke
paradigm shifts in water conservation and consumption. In 2007, NWNL
documented the Columbia River Basin from source to sea. The resulting
photographs accompany images taken of Africa’s Omo, Blue Nile and
Mara River Basins and will serve as a documentation of the availability,
usage and quality of water at individual, community, national and transboundary
levels. This exhibition will draw attention to issues that inform
our understanding of the Columbia River, which flows through the West
Kootenays, and the impact that we have on it, and how it in turn effects how
we live, work and play in our natural environment.
OPENING RECEPTION FRIDAY August 8 AT 7PM
ADMISSION IS FREE

The intent of this exhibition is to tell a local narrative. In the late 1960s the course of the Columbia River was changed dramatically by the High Arrow Dam Project. This new dam would cause the water levels to rise to such a degree that several families were displaced. For many this development changed a way of life while others saw it as a mark of progress. The exhibit will include photographs taken during this time, artifacts collected from the communities affected by the flooding and audio voices of those who were displaced.
